Hyperion by dan simmons5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() They’re weird, spooky, or both, and they’re great at making your inner Keanu Reeves say “whoa.” Cool Lightning Trees Hyperion is rightly remembered as being on the surreal end of science fiction, and the best aspects of its world follow accordingly. ![]() This novel is often compared to The Canterbury Tales, but at least Chaucer didn’t give his protagonists a high-tension goal only to detour from it immediately.īut what kind of setting is revealed to us through this collection of tragic backstories? Is it a thrilling galaxy of bizarre creatures and marvelous worlds, or is the worldbuilding as scattered as the plotting? Let’s find out. ![]() In theory, the story is about six pilgrims * traveling to meet a spooky entity called the Shrike so they can either get a wish or die horribly, but in practice, the book is taken up by the main characters’ tragic backstories or, in some cases, the tragic backstories of people they know. Although calling it a “novel” is a bit misleading, as the book’s structure makes it more akin to six novelettes in a trench coat. Perhaps the most famous of those novels is Hyperion, the first book in a space-opera quartet. ![]() But in ye olden days, he was famous for a series of weird, genre-bending novels that made readers say either “wow, that’s deep” or “the heck did I just read?” These days, Dan Simmons is mostly known as a hard-right Islamophobe * who thinks that moderately progressive social policies will destroy America and tries to keep himself relevant by scolding climate activists. ![]()

Corrupt penelope douglas online5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() “Why did you bring me down here?” I pressed again, searching his eyes for any sign of emotion. His hazel eyes, all that was visible behind his crimson mask that made my heart pump with fear, locked on mine, not blinking or reacting. But instead of checking out the room and the display being put on like I’d originally wanted, I immediately spun around and came to stand directly in front of him, looking up. I reached up and whipped off the blindfold. What did he want with me? Why press that I could do what I wanted and handle myself, and then keep me restrained, still tethered on a leash? “I’m sick of your vague responses,” I bit out. I drew in a sharp breath, anger seeping into every muscle in my body. He paused, and then answered in a flat tone, “Who am I to deny you anything?” “Then why did you let me come down here?” “Did I say that?” he snapped, his tone suddenly gone hard. “You think I’m too young,” I stated, turning my head to speak to him at my side. I exhaled a sigh and turned forward again, hearing the girl’s panting getting faster and louder. ![]() ![]() Her “elephants” told her small things that mattered. The Rat Queens are a varied band, with women of all sizes, races, and sexualities. Even if you aren't an RPG player, this series has so much for everyone. It's as if the series is winking and nodding to RPG fans. This is going to be a great series for fans of RPGs, as there are so many references to video game and D&D mechanics. This is such a fun graphic novel series! Rat Queens follows a band of all lady Dungeons and Dragons-type adventurers who fight monsters, make trouble, and frequent the pub. If you're interested in buying Rat Queens, Vol. Overall, this was an awesome, addicting graphic novel with phenomenal artwork. I really hope we’ll get more background on her and the rest of the Rat Queens. The interactions between them all were incredible (Dee is definitely my favorite). In this volume we follow a group of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit. There was humor, badassery, lots of adventures, and the commentary was outstanding. I really enjoyed the time I spent reading it. This graphic novel had me from the start with the name, the logo, and the concept. I was a little hesitant going into this one, but I needn't have worried because Rat Queens was exactly what I was looking for after finishing Blue Lily, Lily Blue. ![]() As i lay dying by william faulkner5/22/2023 ![]() Faulkner then had to write a letter of apology and explain that he never questioned Hemingway’s physical courage, but only his courage as a writer who never went “out on a limb” or risked “bad taste, over-writing, dullness, etc.” Hemingway’s hurt seemed to have been assuaged, the criticism applying only to his life’s work.īut what did Faulkner mean? Certainly more than a matter of not using words from the dictionary. Talking to a class at the University of Mississippi one day late in his life, William Faulkner remarked that his cogenerationist Ernest Hemingway lacked courage as a writer, that he had always been too careful, never taking risks beyond what he knew he could do, never using “a word where the reader might check his usage by a dictionary.” The remark, quoted in a university press release, was picked up by the wire services and eventually made its way to Hemingway, who was outraged that Faulkner had questioned his courage.
